May is Older Americans Month. This year, the theme is “Engage at Every Age”…something CJE SeniorLife encourages every day! Through our network of life enrichment programming, supportive resources, and healthcare, we hope older adults in our community will be inspired to “age in a positive way.”
As you probably know, there is no age restriction to having fun and partaking in meaningful activities. In retirement, some people choose to learn a new language and travel abroad to test their newfound language skills. Others improve their technology prowess and embark on an Encore Career. Some find themselves in a full-time caregiving role, and open up to others through a support group—of which CJE offers plenty for family members.
CJE also provides many opportunities for older adults to stay connected to the activities they love and even open doors to something totally different. At CJE, you can:
- Volunteer. One of the best ways to shake up your routine and meet new people is to volunteer. CJE’s Volunteer Services department is always looking for people who want to make a difference in an older adult’s life. Deliver meals to seniors in the community, lead educational programs, facilitate pet therapy sessions, or make friendly calls or visits to a local senior—there are many rewarding volunteer opportunities at CJE.
- Challenge yourself to learn something new or stay active. Program participants of CJE’s Center for Healthy Living classes like Spring into Nutrition, Take Charge of Your Diabetes, and A Matter of Balance falls-prevention series—in addition to many other exciting wellness seminars, fitness programs and preventive health screenings—gain new knowledge of how to manage their physical and mental health, learn from each other, and develop action plans. Check our website calendar for these events regularly!
- Tap into your creative side. For older adults who need supervision during the day, our Adult Day Services programming—with professional staff trained in dementia and other aging issues—provides the opportunity for creative self-expression, even for those with health conditions. A certified art therapist is on staff as well as other professionals who specialize in engaging older adults through art, music and dance/movement therapy.
- Find a more vibrant community to live. CJE’s Consumer Assistance team (English- and Russian-speaking) can help older adults find affordable housing, independent and supportive living, and alternative housing for seniors with special needs—which can help older adults with various needs stay more engaged with others. Free appointments can be made through CJE’s Housing Resource Center.
The Administration for Community Living reminds us: “You are never too old (or too young) to participate in activities that can enrich your physical, mental, and emotion well-being.” This month, consider the many ways you can continue to stay engaged and even try something new to spice up your usual routine!
