Support will help fight senior isolation and hunger in greater metropolitan Chicago
CHICAGO, March 1, 2018 – CJE SeniorLife’s Home-Delivered Meals (HDM) program is participating in the 16th annual March for Meals campaign, a month-long, nationwide celebration of Meals on Wheels America and the homebound and vulnerable seniors who rely on its vital safety net. CJE is excited to participate in this year’s campaign through social media and community outreach to raise awareness and support for Chicago’s seniors.
For 46 years, CJE’s HDM program has helped to reduce the food insecurity of low-income seniors living in Evanston, Niles, Northfield and New Trier Townships.
Of CJE’s HDM clientele:
- 100% live with disabilities
- 61% are 80 years old or older
- 77% live alone
Each year, support from Meals on Wheels is critical to maintaining meal service for CJE’s most vulnerable clients. CJE delivered 48,721 meals to 328 seniors in 2017; 96% of CJE’s seniors report that CJE meals help them maintain their independence and 95% report that the person who delivers their meals is attentive to their needs.
“CJE SeniorLife’s Meals on Wheels Program is an integral community support for seniors aging in place,” said Magdalyn Guzzo, Manager, Home-Delivered Meals. “We provide nutrition and a sense of community. Our staff and volunteer team strongly embrace Meals on Wheels America’s ‘More Than Just a Meal’ philosophy—all deliveries include well-being checks and we even make well-being calls on days when clients don’t receive meals.”
The annual March for Meals commemorates the historic day in March 1972 when President Nixon signed into law a measure that amended the Older Americans Act of 1965 and established a national nutrition program for seniors 60 years and older. This March, hundreds of local, community-based senior nutrition programs from across the country like CJE’s HDM program will join forces for the annual awareness campaign and reach out to their communities to garner the support needed to fill the gap between the seniors served and those still in need.
“This March, hundreds of local Meals on Wheels programs will rally their communities to build the support that will enable them to deliver nutritious meals, friendly visits and safety checks to America's most at-risk seniors all year long,” said Ellie Hollander, President and CEO of Meals on Wheels America. “With the demand for Meals on Wheels increasing along with our country’s senior population, we need to ensure that seniors are not forgotten.”
March for Meals provides opportunities to support our nation’s seniors and make our communities stronger and healthier.
