April is National Fair Housing Month and 2018 is the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Fair Housing Act. This act protects renters and buyers from discrimination based on race, color, disability, religion, sex, familial status, or national origin. This is important for older adults, who are more likely to have a sensory or mobility impairment that may require an accommodation.
If you feel you have been discriminated against in housing or need to request a reasonable accommodation, contact CJE's Consumer Assistance department to learn about your rights and how to advocate for yourself.
If you would like to help enforce fair housing laws, you can get involved with local organizations who “test” landlords, real estate agents and others to see if they treat everyone equally. Call Consumer Assistance for more information at 773.508.1000.
