Lieberman Update from President and Chief Executive Officer, Dan Fagin

CJE SeniorLife's President and Chief Executive Officer, Dan Fagin

Dear Lieberman Residents, Family, and Community Members,

I am writing to share some important news regarding Lieberman Center, CJE SeniorLife’s skilled nursing facility in Skokie. Since 1982, Lieberman has proudly provided older adults with short-term rehabilitation following surgery or an illness, as well as residential nursing care for some of our most frail community members. Today, we are announcing that CJE’s Board of Directors, in consultation with Jewish Federation’s leadership, has concluded that the best pathway for Lieberman’s long-term success is to sell it to an experienced skilled nursing operator with greater capacity, access to capital and equally important, a commitment to investing in Lieberman, making it even better than it is today.  In turn, this transaction will provide CJE with the resources to expand and maximize the agency’s impact throughout the community. This difficult decision was reached after extensive deliberation, with the present and future residents always top of mind.

For four decades, we have helped thousands of older adults to get stronger and return to their home, or to live out the remainder of their lives with dignity, respect, and compassionate care through essential funds provided by Jewish Federation, generous community support, private insurance companies, and reimbursements from government programs such as Medicare and Medicaid. The new owners will continue this legacy, serving some of the most vulnerable in our community and accepting payments from Medicaid, Medicare, private pay and insurance companies.

Over the past several years, there has been a shift in how and when older adults utilize the services of a skilled nursing home. The result has been a significant loss of revenue. These changes are not unique to Lieberman, but in fact are being experienced by nursing homes across the country, especially in organizations with only one nursing home in their system, as we do.

What makes Lieberman unique could be best assured by selling to a larger operator—with access to more resources—that is also committed to our agency’s Jewish values. The new owner will continue to provide freshly prepared kosher meals, an array of Jewish and secular life enrichment programs, the services of a rabbi for Shabbat, holiday observances, pastoral care… and more. We want to see Lieberman continue its legacy, for our community members who need it now, next month and years in the future.

Most importantly…please be assured no one will have to move out of Lieberman, regardless of how their bill gets paid. In fact, our residents will experience minimal disruption. After the sale is completed, they can expect to see new programs and services, and most likely, improvements to the building itself. The new operator also intends to retain substantially all of our staff which means that the special bond between residents and their caregivers will continue.

I know you probably have many questions, and I want to be fully transparent throughout this process. In the near term, I invite you to visit our website,, where you will find a Frequently Asked Questions document. There is also a way to submit a question and I will do my very best to provide a prompt reply. We will also hold a series of Town Hall Meetings, via Zoom, where you can hear directly from me and other leaders about this decision, in addition to answering your questions. Details of the dates, times, and how to access the meetings will be posted on Lieberman’s website soon.

Although this decision may be a surprise to you, we have thoroughly explored our options to fulfill CJE’s mission in an evolving and challenging health care environment. I believe that you will soon see that this change in management will allow Lieberman to thrive while providing CJE with the opportunity to expand how the agency serves the Jewish and larger community. I am as excited as ever about Lieberman’s future and ability to enhance the quality of life of our beloved seniors.
